Tenant and Roommate Rights |
I have had the opportunity of living as a tenant as well as a roommate. I have taken an apartment on lease and hence I am a tenant, similarly I have sublet the rooms to other roommates as a lease holder and hence I am also a roommate. Although many websites of several provinces give us a list of rights that we have both as tenants as well as roommate, it is very difficult to find explanations to certain rules and I thought that I would bring it to the attention of everyone from a practical point of view. I live in the city of Toronto and there are a few drug addicts and small time drug peddlers trying to seek accommodation. When people turn up at your place to ask for a room, you do not know whether they are a drug addict or not. One of the best ways of discouraging them from taking the room is make an application form with very strict rules, mentioning clearly since they share the washroom and the kitchen with you they do not come under the tenant protection act and hence their belongings can be thrown out of the house if they did anything illegal. Seeing such strict rules if the applicant is a drug addict they will normally go away, saying that they have to see two other places before deciding and it is better that they leave rather than having them in your apartment and going through the difficulties.
